The charge nurse is responsible for the coordination of patient care services for the clinical specialty, patient population, assigned unit/shift. As a patient and nurse advocate, the charge nurse promotes the optimal level of patient care. The charge nurse uses organizational, clinical, communication and problem solving skills to assist in managing the patient workflow on a daily basis. This position serves as a role model and clinical expert for the delivery of an advanced level of professional nursing care and provides leadership in developing and maintaining optimal patient care standards in the clinical setting.
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's degree preferred. Current California Registered Nurse licensure required. Specialty certification required for new applicants, preferred for incumbents. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers card required.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years acute care nursing within the past 5 years, at least one year of which is within area of specialty. FTE status must be .8 or above.
Knowledge: Demonstrates responsibility, accountability, and commitment to quality patient care delivery. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Demonstrates effective communication skills. Demonstrates leadership experience/activities, including working knowledge of PDSA Quality Improvement methodology and staff meeting participation. Demonstrates ability to lead and mentor staff in clinical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills. Able to effectively present ideas. Expected to maintain an advanced level of practice and act as a clinical resource to staff.
Special Skills/Equipment: Demonstrates basic computer competence related to unit and patient care functions. Demonstrates proficiency with patient care equipment, e.g. IV pumps, CBS machines, PCA pumps, etc.
Unit Specific Addendum: 5 years cardiac surgery operating room experience inclusive of circulating. Prefer cardiac scrub, and cardiac service lead experience. Strong leadership capabilities with good interpersonal skills, must work well as a team player. Demonstrate the ability to support a learning environment, and to communicate effectively and clearly in English. Experience in a educator role specifically in cardiac.
